Consumer Policy Commissioner

The Commissioner for Consumer Policy (until 2010 Commissioner for Consumer Protection ) is an official title for a member of the European Commission . The Directorate-General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO) is attached to it.

The responsibility for consumer protection was changed frequently in the case of new departments in the European Commission. As an independent department, it was spun off from the responsibility of the Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy in January 2007 , as departments became necessary for the two additional commissioners after the EU enlargement in 2007 .

In the Barroso II Commission , which took office in February 2010, the two departments were initially reunited. In addition, the area of pharmaceuticals , which was previously part of the Enterprise and Industry portfolio, came under the responsibility of the Commissioner for Health.

Since Croatia joined the EU in 2013, the two departments have been separated again. The Directorate-General SANCO is still responsible for both policy areas and is therefore also assigned to the Commissioner for Health .
