Věra Jourová

Věra Jourová (born August 18, 1964 in Třebíč ) is a Czech politician of the ANO 2011 party . She was EU Commissioner for Justice, Consumer Protection and Equality from 2014 to 2019 and has been Vice President of the EU Commission and Commissioner for Values ​​and Transparency since 2019 . The US magazine Time included her in its 2019 ranking of the 100 most influential personalities as "the leading voice calling for the regulation of digital technology companies".

Professional and political career

Jourová graduated in 1991 with a degree in cultural anthropology from the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague. Afterwards she worked at a cultural institution and from 1994 in the city administration of her native Třebíč. She worked on the development of the Jewish Quarter in Třebíč , which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003. From 2001 to 2003 Jourová headed the regional development department of Kraj Vysočina .

From 2003 to 2006 she worked in the social democratic party ČSSD . Jourová was Deputy Minister for Regional Development Radko Martínek from 2004 to 2006 . She was charged with corruption and spent a month in custody. After the allegations were found to be false in court, she received state compensation. As a result, Jourová was director of a consulting company in the field of EU regional funding . In 2012 Jourová graduated from Charles University with a law degree.

Jourova joined the ANO 2011 party in 2013, where she was first deputy chief. In the 2013 parliamentary elections , she was the first on the list for Kraj Vysočina. On January 29, 2014 Jourová was sworn in as Minister for Regional Development in the Bohuslav Sobotka government . On October 3rd of the same year, she resigned from this position in view of her appointment to the European Commission.

EU commissioner

On November 1, 2014 Jourová became EU Commissioner for Justice, Consumer Protection and Equality in the Juncker cabinet . In this role, Jourová is particularly committed to strengthening European data protection . The EU-US Privacy Shield fell within her competence and she worked on the General Data Protection Regulation .

On December 1, 2019, she became Vice-President of the EU Commission and Commissioner for Values ​​and Transparency in the Von der Leyen Commission.

Private life

Jourová is a divorced mother of two grown children, a son and a daughter.
