education

Highgate School in London

Hill attended the private "Highgate School", then an all-boys school, in Highgate in north London. He studied history at Trinity College of Cambridge University and began his career in 1983 at RIT & Northern . He then worked for Hamish Hamilton between 1984 and 1985 , before he worked in the research department of the Conservative Party from 1985 to 1986.

Political and professional career

From 1986 to 1989 he was special advisor to Kenneth Clarke , who was Paymaster General , Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and finally Minister of Health in the cabinet of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher .

In 1988 he returned to the private sector and worked for "Lowe Bell Communications" until 1991, before becoming a member of the political staff at 10 Downing Street in 1991 and then between 1992 and 1994 Political Secretary to Prime Minister John Major . In 1994 Hill, who became Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1995, went to the "Bell Pottinger Communications" company, which was formed from "Lowe Bell", as a senior consultant and was subsequently director of the PR agency "Quiller Consultants" between 1998 and 2010 .

By a letters patent dated May 27, 2010 Hill was raised to the British nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Hill of Oareford , of Oareford in the County of Somerset . Shortly afterwards he was appointed Parliamentary Undersecretary in the Ministry of Education , where he was responsible for schools .

On January 7, 2013, after the resignation of Lord Strathclyde , he took over his offices as Leader of the House of Lords and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

EU Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union

In July 2014 Lord Hill was proposed by Prime Minister David Cameron for the post of UK European Commissioner . On September 10th, the designated European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker proposed him as Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Union of Capital Markets . It was confirmed (like the entire new Commission ) by the European Parliament . In the House of Lords he was then granted a leave of absence and he was suspended from his membership there on October 30, 2014.

Hill proposed in September 2015 that the capital requirements for banks should be diversified, as banks in the EU currently have to have the same capital ratios for all transactions. According to Hill, this should stimulate lending primarily in southern Europe, where some countries continued to suffer from a “credit crunch” despite very low key interest rates. This statement was welcomed by Sparkasse President Georg Fahrenschon , who said: "The EU Commission has recognized how important SMEs are for growth and jobs, and after the wave of regulations in recent years, SME loans must be relieved again."

After the citizens of Great Britain voted to leave the referendum on whether their country would remain in the European Union , Hill announced his resignation two days later on June 25. Former Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis took over his position on July 16 , while Hills took over as British EU Commissioner Julian King on September 19, 2016.
