Christos Stylianides ( Greek Χρήστος Στυλιανίδης Chrístos Stylianídis ; born June 26, 1958 in Nicosia ) is a Cypriot politician of the Dimokratikos Synagermos (DISY). From 1 November 2014 to November 30, 2019 he was EU - European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection in the Juncker Commission .

Life

After attending school, Stylianides completed a degree in dentistry at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and after completing his studies started working as a dentist . He also completed postgraduate studies in political science , international relations and European studies with a focus on the European institutions in the United Kingdom and at the John Fitzgerald Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University .

During the tenure of President Glafkos Klerides , he served as government spokesman between 1998 and 1999.

In the parliamentary elections on May 21, 2006 , Stylianides was elected as a candidate for the Democratic Assembly Party DISY by Nikos Anastasiadis for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives and has since represented the constituency of Nicosia . Immediately after his election in 2006 he became a member of the executive office of DISY and between 2006 and 2008 he was also commissioner for European affairs on the executive committee of his party. Subsequently he was coordinator for international affairs and decentralization on the DISY board until 2011.

After Stylianides was re-elected as a member of the House of Representatives in the parliamentary elections on May 21, 2011 , he became Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee of the House of Representatives on Foreign and European Affairs and a member of the Standing Committee on Labor and Social Security. He is also a member of the Cypriot delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

After the election and assumption of office of Nikos Anastasiadis as the new President of Cyprus, Stylianides was again government spokesman on March 1, 2013. On April 14, 2014, he resigned as a government spokesman after DISY named him one of its six candidates for the 2014 European elections on March 1, 2014 .

Member of the European Parliament and European Commissioner

In the 2014 European elections he was elected a member of the 8th European Parliament , where he belongs to the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) (EPP). In the European Parliament he became a member of the Committee on Budgets and a deputy member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. He is also a member of the Delegation for relations with the United States and an alternate member of the Delegation for relations with Israel and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean.

On September 10, 2014 it was announced that the new President of the European Commission , Jean-Claude Juncker , had appointed him European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Protection. As early as September 5, 2014 it was announced that he would be a new representative of Cyprus in the EU Commission. He is to take over this office with the other members of the Juncker Commission on November 1, 2014. On December 1, 2019, Janez Lenarčič succeeded him in the von der Leyen Commission as Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Protection .

Christos Stylianides is married to Thoula Charalambides and has one son.
