Federica Mogherini (born June 16, 1973 in Rome ) is an Italian politician ( PD / PES ) and was the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy from November 1, 2014 to November 30, 2019 . From February 22nd to October 31st, 2014, she was Italian Foreign Minister .

From September 1, 2020, she will be the rector of the College of Europe in Bruges.

She studied political science at La Sapienza University in Rome, where she graduated with a thesis on the relationship between religion and politics in Islam . She then completed an Erasmus stay at the University of Aix-en-Provence in France.

Early years

Mogherini's political career began in 1988 with her entry into the youth association of the Italian Communist Party " Partito Comunista Italiano ", the "Federazione Giovanile Comunista Italiana" (FGCI). In 1996 she joined the youth organization of the Left Democrats (DS for short, Italian Democratici di Sinistra ). From 1999 to 2001 she was vice-chair of the European Association of Young Socialists (ECOSY for short, European Community Organization of Socialist Youth) . From 2001 she was a member of the party council of the Left Democrats. Mogherini was ultimately responsible for foreign policy affairs there and, among other things, maintained relations with the US Democrats .

On August 2, 2014, the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi formally confirmed the candidacy of Italy with Federica Mogherini for the office of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. On August 30, 2014 it was announced that she would succeed Catherine Ashton in this office. At the same time she heads the European External Action Service and is one of seven Vice-Presidents of the European Commission . She was elected by the European Parliament with the other members of the Juncker Commission on October 22, 2014 and took office on November 1.

Russia

In January 2015, Mogherini circulated a discussion paper among the EU foreign ministers examining a rapprochement between the EU and Russia . It also describes a way to reduce international sanctions against Russia . The proposal received harsh reactions from the UK and Poland , while fighting in Ukraine intensified.

In February 2017, Mogherini said that "as long as the Minsk Agreement is not fully implemented, the anti-Russian sanctions will stand." Mogherini said that she supports a policy of cooperation rather than confrontation.

Private

Mogherini is the daughter of the director Flavio Mogherini . She is married to Matteo Rebesani, a former personal assistant to the former mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni , and has two daughters.

Her mother tongue is Italian, she is fluent in French and English and has a good knowledge of Spanish.
