Helmut Brandstätter (born April 24, 1955 in Vienna ) is an Austrian journalist and politician ( NEOS ). From 2010 to 2018 he was editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Kurier and from 2013 to 2019 also its publisher . Brandstätter is running for his party on the second list for the National Council election in Austria 2019 , and has been a member of the National Council since October 2019 .

Life

Helmut Brandstätter is the son of the agricultural politician Ernst Brandstätter (1920–1992), General Secretary of the Presidential Conference of the Austrian Chambers of Agriculture. He studied law at the University of Vienna, where he was also the chairman of the student body there and was awarded a Dr. iur doctorate. In 1982 he started in the international editorial office of ORF , became ORF correspondent in Bonn in 1982 and was responsible for setting up the ORF studio in Brussels in 1986. In 1991 he became head of the Politics and Current Affairs department under General Director Gerd Bacher . In 1995, under General Director Gerhard Zeiler , he was responsible for and moderated the ORF report .

In 1997 Brandstätter went to Berlin as managing director and editor-in-chief of the news channel n-tv , returned to Austria in 2003 as managing director of the newly founded regional channel Puls TV , where he also appeared again as a presenter. In 2005 he left Puls TV and worked as a freelance management consultant, event moderator and advertising testimonial. In 2008 his book Hör.Mir.Zu.

On August 1st, 2010 Brandstätter succeeded Christoph Kotanko as editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Kurier . He will sell his majority stake of 51% in Brandstätter Business Communications, an agency for communication and coaching, which he founded in 2005. From 2013 Brandstätter also worked as publisher for the courier . At the beginning of September 2018, Martina Salomon was appointed by the Supervisory Board as the new editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Kurier from October 1, 2018. In July 2019, Brandstätter left the courier at his own request .

On July 25, 2019, he announced his candidacy on the NEOS list in the National Council election. On October 23, 2019, he moved as a member of the XXVII. Legislative period in the National Council.

Brandstätter is a second married to ORF journalist Patricia Pawlicki and lives in Vienna. He has two children from his first marriage and one child from his second marriage.
