International Democracy Prize Bonn

The International Democracy Prize Bonn is an award of the International Democracy Prize Bonn eV, endowed with 10,000 euros . Since 2009, the prize has been awarded to natural and legal persons who have made an outstanding contribution to democratization and human rights in their country.

Sponsoring association

The prize is awarded by the Bonn International Democracy Prize Association of the same name. The association was founded in 2007; The founding members were the Alexander-Koenig-Gesellschaft , Sparkasse KölnBonn , Volksbank Bonn Rhein-Sieg e. G. and Deutsche Welle . In the meantime, the publisher of the Bonner General-Anzeiger also belongs to the group of supporters. The current CEO is Erik Bettermann ; Jürgen Wilhelm chairs the Board of Trustees .

Award winners

Youth Democracy Prize

In cooperation with the Bonn International Democracy Prize, the Federal Agency for Civic Education awards the € 3000 youth democracy prize. Since 2009 projects for or by young people who are outstandingly committed to democracy or democratization in Europe have been awarded annually since 2009. A 12-member youth jury will decide on the winner. So far:

  • 2009: “Jaunime, Rinkis Rimtai!” (“Youth, Vote Smart!”), A Lithuanian project to encourage young people to vote.
  • 2010: “Balkans, let's get up”, a project to promote understanding between young people and their neighbors in the Balkans .
  • 2012: transeuropa (festival)
