Marianne Leonie Petrus Thyssen (born July 24, 1956 in Sint-Gillis-Waas ) is a Belgian politician. She was a member of the European Parliament from 1991 to 2014 . From May 15, 2008 to June 23, 2010 she was chairman of the Flemish Christian Democratic party Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V). From November 2014 to November 2019 she was EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Worker Mobility.

Life

Marianne Thyssen grew up as one of three children in a family of bakers in Sint-Gillis-Waas. She attended schools in Wachtebeke and Sint-Niklaas and then studied law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), where she worked as an assistant at the law faculty after graduating in 1979. From 1980 she worked as legal advisor for the medium- sized company association Christelijke Middenstands- en Burgervrouwen (CMBV) (today MARKANT) and for the Nationaal Christelijk Middenstand Verbond (NCMV) (today UNIZO), where she became head of the organization office in 1988 and briefly worked as general secretary in 1991 was.

Thyssen gained her first political experience as an employee in the cabinet of State Secretary for Health Wivina Demeester (1986–1988). She was elected to the European Parliament in December 1991 and was confirmed in office in the 1994 , 1999 , 2004 and 2009 European elections . In July 2004 she became Vice-Chair of the European People's Party - European Democrats .

Thyssen has also been politically active in her home town of Sint-Joris-Weert since 1995 - initially as a council member and from 2001 to 2008 as a lay judge.

On May 15, 2008 Thyssen was elected chairman of the CD&V. In August 2014 Thyssen was nominated by the Belgian government for the post of EU Commissioner in the Juncker Commission . She took office on November 1, 2014, and accordingly resigned from her seat in the European Parliament on October 31, 2014.

Her term of office ended when the Von der Leyen Commission took office , of which she is no longer a member.
