The 2009 European elections in Belgium took place on June 7, 2009. It was carried out in the course of the EU- wide European elections in 2009 , with 22 of the 736 seats in the European Parliament in Belgium . Of these, 13 belong to the Dutch-speaking electoral college, eight to the French-speaking and one to the German-speaking electoral college.

Electoral system

The legal basis for the European elections in Belgium is the federal law of March 23, 1989, last amended by the federal law of April 21, 2007. In addition, the federal law of March 11, 2003 stipulates that as many female and male candidates must be listed on the electoral lists the first two candidates and alternates on a list must not be of the same gender.

Actively entitled to vote at any Belgians over the age of 18 years who has applied his residence in Belgium or postal voting for the Belgian electoral lists. Also, EU citizens are eligible to vote under the additional condition that they are registered on the electoral roll. Every EU citizen who is 21 years of age or older, who resides in an EU member state and who, depending on the electoral body, speaks Dutch, French or German, is eligible to vote.

Voting is compulsory in Belgium . Violations can be punished with a fine.

The election is a proportional representation , which means that each party receives seats based on its share of the valid votes cast nationwide. The electoral area is divided into four constituencies: Flemish Region , Wallonia Region , German-Speaking Region and Brussels-Capital Region . In accordance with the Royal Decree of October 24, 2008, 13 members are elected by the Dutch-speaking electoral body, eight by the French-speaking electoral body and one member by the German-speaking electoral body.
