Isabelle AJ Durant (born September 4, 1954 in Brussels ) is a French-speaking Belgian politician of the green party Ecolo . She has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009 .

Life

Durant has a university degree in political economy and social sciences. She worked in Brussels as a district manager and was one of the founders of one of the first ecologically oriented parties in Europe. She has been a member of the management bodies of ÉCOLO since 1994.

From 1999 to 2003 she was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport in Belgium's first government with Green participation, Cabinet I of Guy Verhofstadt . As Green Minister of Transport, Isabelle Durant completely changed the importance of road safety in favor of the rights and safety of pedestrians and cyclists. The number of traffic accidents fell by 12 percent. Initial criticism of the catalog of fines she had demanded did not prevent the vote on it from being won: nobody in the Chamber of Deputies voted against it.

In 2000, Isabelle Durant surprised friends and foes alike with the proposal to abolish night flights. She wanted to guarantee the residents a good night's sleep. Protest from local airport operators led to a crisis with Premier Guy Verhofstadt. Because of the Parti Socialiste's rigid stance on this matter, Isabelle Durant left the federal government in May 2003 together with her party colleague Olivier Deleuze .

On the occasion of the Clearstream affair , in which Deutsche Börse AG was involved, in 2004, together with the socialist Senator Jean Cornil, she developed a legal initiative to investigate and combat tax evasion .

Isabelle Durant is currently a member of the Belgian Senate and the Federation Secretariat of Ecolo .

She was a candidate for the office of mayor in Schaarbeek in the local council elections in October 2006.

In the European elections in 2009 , Durant was elected as a member of the European Parliament . In September 2010 she was involved in the founding of the Spinelli Group , which advocates European federalism .
