The Tjibaou Cultural Center is a building opened in May 1998 by the French state in New Caledonia , in which cultural events of the Kanak are offered, as well as other exhibitions, conferences and concerts.

The location

The building is located on the narrow Tina peninsula in the east of the capital Nouméa, part of the main island Grande Terre, and is surrounded by a park. There is a lagoon on one side of the peninsula and the sea coast on the other. The peninsula is close to the Magenta regional airport . The location for the building was chosen because the Kanakian independence fighter Jean-Marie Tjibaou organized the Melanesia 2000 cultural festival here in 1975 .

The building

The 7650 m² building was constructed from 1993 to 1998 under the direction of the architect Renzo Piano . In collaboration with the ethnologist Alban Bensa, a building was created that is reminiscent of the traditional Kanak huts. Ten upright, up to 28 m high, often perforated shells made of wooden strips are attached to an elongated, flat building. The structures divide the building into three units, resembling traditional Kanak huts as well as a traditional Kanak village.

In the building itself there are exhibition rooms, an event room, an open-air theater, a media library and rooms for work and video presentations.
