biography

After attending school, he studied information science at the University of Liège and graduated with a licentiate . Immediately afterwards, he began his political career as a member of the parliament for Ecolo José Daras .

In 1986 he himself became the federal secretary of Ecolo and thus the party's spokesman. He held this office until 1991 when he was elected as a candidate by Ecolo for a member of the Chamber of Deputies . After the merger of Ecolo and Agalev into a common parliamentary group , he became parliamentary group leader in 1993 . In 1994 he renounced his parliamentary seat and was instead re-Federal Secretary of Ecolo and member of the municipal council of Liege .

In his function as federal secretary, he was the main preparer of the campaign program for the parliamentary elections in 1999. The party recorded large gains in votes and received 18 percent of the vote in Wallonia . He himself was seen as the most important politician in his party for this election success. After the parliamentary elections Ecolo joined the coalition government of Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt and he himself was to become a minister in the first government of Verhofstadt . After the death of his teenage daughter and some internal party disagreements about himself, Isabelle Durant became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport instead .

He himself gave up the office of Federal Secretary and only remained a member of the Senate between 1999 and 2003 .

In 2002, one year before his retirement from politics, he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State for his political merits .

Since an accident in 2005 he has suffered from damage to his spine and has been dependent on a walking stick ever since . However, in 2007 Morael returned to politics and publicly stood up for Ségolène Royal during the 2007 French presidential election .

In the Belgian parliamentary elections in June 2007, he was on the last list of Ecolo for the Senate. Despite his personal share of the vote of almost 50,000 votes, he did not succeed in returning to the Senate.

In the Senate elections on June 13, 2010 , he was elected a member of the Senate with 60,000 votes by the French-speaking electoral college and represented the interests of Ecolo in the electoral period up to 2014, up to 2012 alongside Claudia Niessen from the German-speaking community, who was second on the electoral list .
