José Daras

José Daras (born May 28, 1948 in Malonne ) is a Belgian politician of the Ecolo party . As a founding member of Ecolo, Daras was a member of the parliament ( Chamber of Deputies and Senate ) from 1981 to 2010 and Vice-Prime Minister of the Government of the Walloon Region from 1999 to 2004 .

José Daras is a trained geographer and spent ten years teaching before entering politics. In 1980 he was involved in the founding of the green party Ecolo and represented it from 1981 to 1999 as an opposition politician in the various parliaments of the country.

When the Greens in the Walloon Region took part in the government with the Socialists ( PS ) and Liberals ( PRL ) in 1999 , Daras was appointed Vice- President under Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo and Jean-Claude Van Cauwenberghe (both PS) Prime Minister and the Minister for Transport, Mobility and Energy. During his ministerial tenure, he focused on improving the mobility of people with limited mobility and on compliance with the 1997 Kyoto Protocol . After the 2004 elections, in which Ecolo lost numerous votes, he left the majority.

Daras then returned to the Senate, which he eventually left after the 2010 federal elections. He has also been head of Etopia, the Ecolo study center, since 2004. During the state crisis of 2007 Daras was one of the ministers of state whom King Albert II consulted in one-to-one meetings.

Honors

Daras is in command of the Order of the Leopold . Since January 30, 1995, he has held the honorary title of Minister of State.
