Committee on Budgets (European Parliament)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Committee on Budgets ( BUDG ) is one of the twenty standing committees of the European Parliament . The Budget Committee decides on the budget of the European Union . Johan van Overtveldt ( N-VA / EKR ) has been the committee chairman since July 2019 .

The committee is responsible for the financial perspective of the income and expenditure of the European Union and for its own resources . It deals with Parliament's powers in setting the annual budget and its decentralized bodies, the financial activities of the European Investment Bank and budgeting for the European Development Fund . It also examines the financial implications of all EU legislative acts and monitors the implementation of the current budget.

The counterpart of the Budget Committee in the Council of Ministers is the Council for Economic and Financial Affairs . The responsible member in the European Commission is the Commissioner for Financial Planning and Budget . Like the budget committees in other parliaments, the BUDG committee is one of the more important committees in parliament, as it is here that decisions about the financial resources of individual institutions and programs are made. However, the European Union has not yet been able to raise its own taxes, and it is not the European Parliament but the Council of Ministers that ultimately decides on its other income. It is different with expenditure, on which Parliament has the final say. An exception to this was the common agricultural policy up until the Lisbon Treaty , which made up a large part of the total budget and was the sole responsibility of the Council; however, Parliament now has full say in all parts of the budget.
