Johan Van Overtveldt (born August 24, 1955 in Mortsel ) is a Belgian journalist and politician of the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA). At times editor-in-chief of Trends magazine , he was Minister of Finance in the federal government of Charles Michel from 2014 to 2018. Since 2014 he has also been a member of the European Parliament, which was only re-elected in 2019.

Life

Johan Van Overtveldt obtained a license in "applied economics" from the University of Antwerp (UA) and an MBA from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven). He finally received his doctorate from the UA, where he has been teaching economics as a visiting professor since 2012.

After completing his studies, he began his career as a journalist with Trends Magazine from 1978 to 1982 before working in various private companies. Van Overtveldt then moved from 2004 to 2010 to the Christian employers' association Verbond van Kristelijke Werkgevers en Kaderleden (VKW, het Ondernemersplatform). After all, he was editor-in-chief of Knack magazine from 2012 to 2013 and editor-in-chief of Trends from 1992 to 1999 and 2010 to 2013, respectively .

In 2013 Johan Van Overtveldt entered active politics. For the N-VA he headed the list for the European elections and was elected to the European Parliament in the elections on May 25, 2014 . When the government was formed following the elections, Van Overtveldt was one of the N-VA negotiators alongside Bart De Wever and Jan Jambon . In the so-called "Sweden Coalition", the federal government under Prime Minister Charles Michel ( MR ), Peter Van Overtveldt finally received the post of finance minister in October 2014. He officially held the office until 2018, and continued on an interim basis until a new government was formed.

In the European elections in 2019 he was re-elected to the European Parliament. In the ninth legislative period he is for his group - European Conservatives and Reformers - a member of the Committee on Budgets , of which he was elected chairman. He is also a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and a deputy member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism .
