Pierre Gramegna (born April 22, 1958 in Esch an der Alzette ) is a Luxembourg politician of the Democratic Party and ex-diplomat. Since December 4, 2013 he has been Minister of Finance in the Bettel-Schneider government in Luxembourg.

Life

Pierre Gramegna studied law and economics at the Panthéon-Assas University in Paris . In 1981 he completed his law degree. In 1982 he studied economics. This was followed by a DEA in Community law.

In 1983 he started working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Luxembourg. In 1988 he became a political and economic advisor at the Luxembourg embassy in Paris. After four years he was appointed Luxembourg Consul General and Director of the Board of Economic Development in San Francisco . From 1996 to 2002 he was Luxembourg Ambassador to Japan and South Korea . He then managed Luxembourg's international economic relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a year as director.

In 2003 he accepted the post of General Director of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce. From 2003 to 2013, he was also active in this role on several boards of directors of Luxembourg companies, e. B. on the boards of directors of Cargolux , the Luxembourg Stock Exchange or BGL BNP Paribas .

Pierre Gramegna is married and has two children.

Appointment as finance minister

Quite surprisingly, Pierre Gramegna was appointed Minister of Finance of Luxembourg on December 4, 2013, after many different names had made the rounds in press reports. His first few months in office were also controversial, including the resignation of some high-ranking officials in the Luxembourg Ministry of Finance and the involvement of a consultancy firm that was employing his daughter at the time.
