Cai-Göran Alexander Stubb (born April 1, 1968 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish politician ( National Collection Party ). From May 29, 2015 to June 22, 2016, he was Minister of Finance in the Sipilä cabinet , previously he was Prime Minister of Finland from June 24, 2014 to May 29, 2015 . He was then Vice President of the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg from 2017 to 2019 and now works at the European University Institute in Florence .

Life

Stubb attended Mainland High School in Daytona Beach ( Florida , USA ) until 1986 and then Lärkan High School in Helsinki. After completing his military service, he studied political science at Furman University in South Carolina (USA). In 1993 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree . In 1995 he obtained a Master of Arts degree in European Political Affairs at the College of Europe in Bruges ( Belgium ) . Between 1995 and 1997 he worked for the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from 1997 to 1999 as a researcher for the Academy of Finland . Since 1997 he has also appeared as a newspaper columnist. In 1999 he received a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. ) from the London School of Economics .

After his doctorate, Stubb was mainly active in European politics. From 2004 to 2008 he was a member of the European Parliament . After Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva's resignation in Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen's cabinet , Stubb succeeded him on April 4, 2008. In the 2011 parliamentary election , the rallying party became the strongest group. The party chairman Jyrki Katainen formed a broad coalition government and appointed Stubb in the new cabinet as Minister for Europe and Foreign Trade.

After Katainen announced his resignation in April 2014 for the following June, Stubb was elected as the new party leader on June 14th. At the party conference in Lahti , he prevailed against Paula Riskko and Jan Vapaavuori . Immediately afterwards on June 24th, Stubb also became the new Prime Minister and formed the Stubb Cabinet .

In November 2014, Stubb's government survived a motion of no confidence by the opposition for the third time.

Following the general election in 2015 , Stubb's government submitted, as is custom, its resignation. Since the rallying party was no longer the strongest party after losing votes, the formation of a new government under Juha Sipilä was negotiated by the Center Party. On May 29, 2015, Sipilä replaced him in the office of prime minister and appointed him finance minister in his cabinet .

From June 11th to 14th, 2015 he took part in the 63rd Bilderberg Conference in Telfs-Buchen , Austria .

In June 2016, 441 delegates voted to replace Stubbs as party chairman at the National Assembly Party's congress in Lappeenranta , and 361 voted for him. The previous interior minister, Petteri Orpo , became the new party chairman and finance minister . Previously, Stubb had come under fire for poor poll numbers and allegedly too large concessions to the coalition partners.

After his political career at national level, Stubb returned to the European institutions: at the suggestion of the Finnish government, the politician became Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) on August 1, 2017 , a position he held until the end of 2019. On May 1, 2020, Stubb was finally appointed Director of the School of Transnational Governance of the European University Institute s (Florence).

At the beginning of October 2018, Stubb declared that he wanted to run for the European People's Party in the election of the successor to EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker . Until then, Manfred Weber was the only applicant for the EPP ; Stubb could not prevail against Weber. In 2019, his ambitions to succeed Christine Lagarde as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund also failed .

Private

Stubb is married to a British lawyer, has two children and lives with his family in Espoo . He is the son of a Finnish-speaking mother and the Finnish-Swedish ice hockey official Göran Stubb, who came from Karelia . As a result, Stubb grew up bilingual and speaks fluent English, French and German. In his spare time he often takes part in marathon and triathlon competitions. In 2016 he completed the Ironman Hawaii in 11:13 h. In 2009, together with Ilkka Järvimäki, he published the book Miehen treenikirja , a guide for men for the execution and motivation of various sports and their planning in daily life.
