Kaarlo Castrén

Kaarlo Castrén (born February 28, 1860 in Turtola , † November 19, 1938 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish banker, politician and Prime Minister.

Studies and professional career

Castrén was born as Karl Castrén in Lapland in 1860 as the son of pastor Johan Robert Castrén and his wife Ida Maria Susanna Taucher . Castrén completed a law degree , which he completed in 1887 as a Bachelor of Laws . He was then from 1888 to 1892 a civil servant in the financial authority of the Senate Administration. At the same time he was a lawyer in the law firm Castrén & Snellman from 1888 to 1898. From 1892 to 1904 he was a member of the board of the Kansallis-Osake-Bank. In 1909 he founded his own law firm and in 1916 became director of Kansallis-Osake-Pankki.

Political career

Castrén began his political career in 1894 when he was elected to the state parliament, to which he also belonged from 1905 to 1906. From 1908 to 1909 he was first Senator for Civil Affairs in the then Senate Administration of the Grand Duchy .

After independence he joined the National Progressive Party (KEP) and was Finance Minister in Lauri Ingman's first cabinet from November 1918 to April 1919 . He followed this on April 17, 1919 in the office of Prime Minister. After his cabinet had submitted a proposal for the formation of a future republican government, it resigned on August 15, 1919.
