Juho Emil Sunila (born August 16, 1875 in Liminka as Johan Emil Sunila , † October 2, 1936 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish politician and Prime Minister .

Political career

Member of Parliament and Minister of Agriculture

Sunila was the administrative director of the Department of Agriculture. He began his political career in 1922 when he was elected member of the Finnish Parliament . There he represented the interests of the Landbund (ML) until his death . During the following years he became one of the leading politicians of the federal government alongside the then Prime Minister and later President Kyösti Kallio .

From November 1922 to January 1924 and from March 1925 to December 1926 he was Minister of Agriculture in the cabinets of Kallio and Antti Tulenheimo . With the support of the then president and former governor of the agricultural province of Viipuri , Lauri Kristian Relander , he promoted the productivity of agriculture through effectiveness rather than through expansion of the arable land.

In 1930 he was President of the Reichstag for a short time .

Twice Prime Minister

Sunila was the first time from December 17, 1927 to December 22, 1928 Prime Minister of a cabinet consisting only of ministers of the Landbund.

From March 21, 1931 to December 14, 1932 he was Prime Minister for the second time. This “grand coalition” included ministers of the Landbund, politicians from the National Collection Party ( KOK), the National Progressive Party (KEP) and the Swedish People's Party (SFP) . The Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) was excluded from government participation due to the growth of the right-wing extremist Lapua movement .
