Juho Kusti Paasikivi , Valtioneuvos [ ˈjuhɔ ˈkusti ˈpɑːsikivi ] (born November 27, 1870 in Koski Hl, today's name Hämeenkoski ; †  December 14, 1956 in Helsinki ), former Swedish name (until 1885): Johan Gustaf Hellsten , was a politician and from Finnish President from 1946 to 1956 .

Life

Paasikivi took part in Finnish political life at an early age: he was a member of the State Council for the Finnish Party before Finland gained independence , was Minister of State in the first government of independent Finland, in which he belonged to the National Collection Party (Kokoomus), and Finland's envoy in Sweden from 1936 to 1939, where he represented the so-called Scandinavian orientation. He was head of the Finnish delegation in the peace negotiations with Soviet Russia in the Estonian Dorpat in 1920 and in further negotiations with the USSR : in autumn 1939 before the winter war and the armistice negotiations in spring 1944. From 1940 to 1941 he was Finnish ambassador to the Soviet Union ; from 1944 to 1946 he also held the office of Finnish head of government one more time. After Gustaf Mannerheim's resignation in 1946, Paasikivi became President and remained so until 1956. During his presidency, the 1948 Finnish-Soviet Treaty was signed. As a politician, he represented the line of reconciliation with the Soviet Union (which his opponents called Soviet allegiance), which resulted in Finland's “limited sovereignty”. He was succeeded by Urho Kekkonen , who was to continue his policy, whereupon it is also known as the Paasikivi-Kekkonen line.

Paasikivi died in 1956. After a state memorial service in Helsinki Cathedral , he was buried in the Hietaniemi Cemetery in Helsinki.

The Finnish banknote of 10  marks , which was in circulation from 1963 to the 1970s, bears his portrait.
