Paavo Tapio Lipponen  [ ˈpɑːvɔ ˈlipːɔnɛn ] (born April 23, 1941 in Turtola ) is a Finnish politician and was President of the Finnish Parliament until 2007 . Life

He was born in Turtola in northern Finland. He spent his childhood in Kuopio . In 1959 he graduated from school there and then studied philosophy and literature for a year at Dartmouth College in Hanover , New Hampshire , USA .

After returning to Finland , he moved to Helsinki , where he graduated from Helsinki University in 1971 with a degree in international political science. From 1963 to 1965 he was editor of the student magazine Ylioppilaslehti and from 1965 to 1967 freelance work for the Finnish public service broadcaster Yleisradio .

In the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) he held various posts from 1967 to 1979, but first came into public focus when he became secretary to then Prime Minister Mauno Koivisto for four years in 1979 .

Lipponen was a member of the Finnish Parliament from 1983 to 1987 and was re-elected in 1991. In 1993 he was elected chairman of the Finnish Social Democratic Party, which under his leadership won the parliamentary elections in 1995 and 1999. In the second half of 1999 he took over the presidency of the European Council for six months . In 2005, Lipponen was replaced as party leader by Eero Heinäluoma and was President of the Finnish Parliament until 2007. In the presidential election in Finland in 2012 he was put up as a candidate by the SDP, but received only 6.7%, which put him in fifth place of all candidates. The SDP thus lost the office of President of the Republic of Finland after 30 years .

He has been married to the history teacher Päivi Lipponen (former Hertzberg) since 1998, with whom he has two daughters.
