Vieno Johannes Sukselainen (until 1928: Saari ; born October 12, 1906 in Paimio , † April 6, 1995 in Lohja ) was a Finnish politician and Prime Minister .

Studies and professional career

Johannes "Jussi" Sukselainen worked after studying social sciences at the University of Tampere as a professor of social sciences and from 1969 to 1978 as the rector of the University of Tampere.

From 1954 to 1971 he was Director General of the Kela Social Insurance Institution .

Political career

Party chairman, member of parliament and speaker of parliament

Sukselainen began his political career in 1945 when he was elected chairman of the Landbund (ML) . He held this office until 1964 and was then replaced by Johannes Virolainen , under whom the Landbund was renamed the Center Party (KESK) in 1965. As such, he represented the interests of the Landbund and later the KESK from 1948 to 1970 and from 1972 to 1978 as a member of the Reichstag .

The Reichstag elected him President of Parliament from 1956 to 1957, 1958, 1968 to 1970 and 1972 to 1975 .

Minister and Prime Minister

From 1950 to 1951, Sukselainen was Minister of Finance and then Minister of the Interior in Urho Kekkonen's first cabinet until 1953 .

On May 27, 1957, he became Prime Minister of a coalition government made up of the Landbund (ML), the Finnish People's Party (LKP) and the Swedish People's Party (SFP) . He also appointed a number of non-party ministers to his cabinet. However, this minority government had to resign on October 29, 1957.

On January 13, 1959, he was again Prime Minister of a coalition government made up of ML and SFP. However, this minority government could only rely on a quarter of the MPs and was therefore unstable. A vote of no confidence by the communist SKDL in 1960 failed. However, after an eleven-day transitional government from Eemil Luukka , Sukselainen was replaced as Prime Minister on July 14, 1961 by Martti Miettunen . In 1961 he was also acting foreign minister for a short time.
