Erkki Tuomioja

Erkki Tuomioja (born July 1, 1946 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish politician of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and was Finland's Foreign Minister from 2000 to April 2007 and again from June 22, 2011 to May 29, 2015 .

Tuomioja studied political science and economics . He is assigned to the left wing of the SDP; he is a member of Attac . His father, Sakari Severi Tuomioja , was also a politician.

From July 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006, he took over the Presidency of the EU as Foreign Minister during the Finnish Council Presidency .

After his party's defeat in the parliamentary elections on March 18, 2007 , Tuomioja was replaced in the Foreign Ministry by Ilkka Kanerva ( Conservative ). After the 2011 general election , Tuomioja returned to this post. After the Social Democrats had lost significantly in the parliamentary elections on April 19, 2015 , they left the government; Tuomioja was then replaced by Timo Soini on May 29, 2015 . In 2017 Tuomioja received the Great Cross of Merit with Star and Shoulder Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to the relations between Finland and Germany.

Tuomioja is Associate Professor of Political History at the University of Helsinki and a widely read author on topics such as the European Project, the EU's economic and monetary policy, and Finnish foreign and security policy.
