In Europe, the SDP is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Europe and currently has 2 members in the European Parliament.
history
The party was founded in 1899 as the "Finnish Workers' Party". The 1903 Forssa party congress changed its name to the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) and passed the first party program. In 1952 and 1987 the basic program was revised. The "Principles of Social Democracy" declaration has been in force since 1999.
From 1959 to 1973 there was a split of the Social Democrats under the name of the Social Democratic Federation of Workers and Small Farmers , which had been formed around the former chairman Emil Skog . The federal government supported Urho Kekkonen's foreign policy, which was friendly to the Soviet Union . However, there was little support among voters. After repeated attempts to get closer and increased membership changes, the federal government was incorporated into the SDP in 1973.
The Social Democrats were able to appoint the President between 1982 and 2012 .
