After the election

Ahti Karjalainen from the Landbund became Prime Minister of a government consisting of the Landbund, the Social Democratic Union of Workers and Small Farmers, the Swedish People's Party, the Gathering Party and the People's Party of Finland. There were also three trade unionists in the cabinet, but they left the government in the fall of 1963. Reino Lehto was then commissioned to form a transitional government. The budget situation deteriorated under Lehto. In September 1964, Johannes Virolainen became chairman of a majority government from the Landbund, which had meanwhile been renamed Zentrum, and which consisted of the same parties in the Karjalainen cabinet, with the exception of the Social Democratic Union of Workers 'and Small Peasants' Union.
