Museu Histórico Nacional (Brazil)
Museu Histórico Nacional (MHN) is a Brazilian national historical museum founded in 1922 in Rio de Janeiro on Praça Marechal Âncora of the historic center of the Zona Central .
The museum has over 287,000 exhibits, including a large coin collection from Latin America .
The museum is located in the buildings of Fort St. James of Mercy , built in 1603 ; the first building complexes go back to an order issued in 1567 by King Sebastian of Portugal . In 1693 the Calaboose prison was built on the site . In 1762 the ammunition depot Casa do Trem was added to the fort . The last extensions were the arsenal in 1764 and barracks in 1835.
The National Museum was established in August 1922 by decree of the Brazilian President Epitácio Pessoa . The museum houses, among other things, a museum library.
The museum director has been the historian Paulo Knauss de Mendonça since 2014 .
