European elections in Finland 2014
The European elections in Finland in 2014 took place on May 25, 2014. It was carried out as part of the EU- wide European elections in 2014 , with 13 of the 751 seats in the European Parliament in Finland .
The election winner was the conservative rallying party ahead of the center party. The Finns were able to improve their election results compared to 2009 by more than three percentage points, but remained below the previously determined survey results. However, with 12.9%, they became the third strongest force ahead of the Social Democratic Party of Finland, which got its worst ever result in a national election with 12.3%.
Electoral system
Finland uses an open list system when voting . The order of the candidates is not determined by the parties. The voters vote for a candidate, not a party. To determine the number of seats allocated to a party, the votes of all candidates of a party are added together. The D'Hondt method is used for this. Lists can be linked together so that the votes of the parties are added together when allocating seats. Within a party, the seats are then awarded to the candidates with the most votes.
