Nils Torvalds
Nils Torvalds (born August 7, 1945 in Ekenäs ) is a Finnish politician belonging to the Swedish minority . He is a member of the Swedish People's Party (SFP). His oldest son is Linus Torvalds , the initiator of the Linux computer operating system kernel .
Life
Nils Torvalds, son of the poet and journalist Ole Torvalds , attended the Law School of Helsinki University . He worked as secretary of the Association of Freedom Fighters in Finland and as a carpenter at the Finnish cable factory, which later became part of the Nokia concern. From 1973 to 1980 he was editor-in-chief of the workers' newspaper Enhet . However, he interrupted this activity for two years to study economics at the Social Science Institute in Moscow .
From 1980 to 1982 Torvalds was part of the Espoo City Council . During this time he also worked as a freelance journalist. In 1982 he switched to the Finnish radio station Yleisradio or Rundradion. There he was initially a journalist in the foreign department, from 1987 he headed the Swedish-language radio news, in early 1990 he became the head of the Swedish-language news. From 1995 to 1999 he was a correspondent from Moscow , from 2000 to 2004 in Washington, DC From January 2005 he worked on historical documentary programs. He continued this job until his retirement in September 2008.
After leaving Yleisradio, Torvalds turned to new responsibilities. From 2007 to 2009 he was chairman of the Swedish Disability Federation in Finland and until 2011 chaired the delegations for international human rights. He is the chairman of the Association for the Issues of Developmental Disorders and a board member of the Cooperation Association for Dysfunction. In 2008 he became vice-chairman of the Swedish People's Party in Finland and held this office until 2011. Also in 2008 he moved to the Helsinki City Council . In mid-2012 he became a member of the European Parliament after the previous sfp member Carl Haglund resigned from his seat.
Nils Torvalds was married twice and has five children.

Torvalds is a member of the board of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe.
He is the Vice-Chairman of the Fisheries Committee . He is a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs . He is a deputy in the Committee on Budgets , in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs , in the delegation in the EU-Russia parliamentary cooperation committee and in the delegation for relations with Afghanistan.
2018 presidential nomination
At the Congress of the Swedish People's Party in June 2017, Torvalds was named a candidate for the 2018 presidential election .
Torvalds defined his campaign as part of an effort for a more liberal language and cultural policy in Finland. He supports NATO membership.
Torvald's special advisor Elisabet Rantschukoff left the European Parliament on August 15, 2017 for his campaign and became campaign manager.
In the election, Torvalds received 1.5% of the vote.
