Sampo Terho (born September 20, 1977 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish politician ( Blue Future ). From May 5, 2017 to June 2019, he was Minister for European Affairs, Culture and Sport in the Sipilä cabinet .

Life

Terho is a Master of Philosophy. He initially worked as information secretary in the Ministry of Defense, then as a member of the EUFOR peacekeeping force , and later as a strategy and media researcher at the National Defense College.

Terho was chairman of the base fins in the party district of the Helsinki district of Kallio, as well as second deputy chairman of the district organization and is chairman of the Federation of Finns Suomalaisuuden Liitto . From April 26, 2011, when he replaced Timo Soini , until April 26, 2015, he was a member of the European Parliament .

On May 5, 2017, Terho was appointed Minister for European Affairs , Culture and Sport in the Sipilä cabinet .

In June 2017 he applied unsuccessfully for the office of party leader of the grassroots Finns. After the victory of Jussi Halla-aho , the party experienced a shift to the right, which ended in a  government  crisis. With members of the Finnish Parliament , including Timo Soini, he founded the New Alternative faction . A little later, the Blue Future party was founded on the basis of this faction , of which Terho has been chairman since June 2017.

In June 2019, Tytti Tuppurainen succeeded him as European Minister in the Rinne cabinet .

Terho was deputy chairman / member of the board of the Europe of Freedom and Democracy Group in the EU Parliament .

He was a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs , the Subcommittee on Security and Defense and the Delegation for Relations with Canada.

He served as a deputy on the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defense Policy , the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and the Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand.
