The Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defense Policy (AFET) is one of the 20 committees of the European Parliament . David McAllister (CDU / EPP) has held the chair since January 2017 and was re-elected in July 2019.

Main committee

The Committee is responsible for both the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP). Other tasks include relations with other EU institutions and bodies, with international organizations such as the United Nations, as well as with third countries and candidate countries for EU membership . In the latter case, the committee negotiates and concludes contracts. Another area of ​​activity of the committee is on issues of human rights, the protection of minorities and the promotion of democracy in other countries. There is a sub-committee for both human rights policy and defense policy, which supports the main committee.

The Committee on Foreign Affairs also coordinates the work of delegations, sub-committees and commissions in its area of ​​responsibility.

Subcommittee on Human Rights

The Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) assists the Committee on Foreign Affairs on issues relating to human rights , protection of minorities and the promotion of democratic values ​​in third countries.

Security and Defense Subcommittee

The Subcommittee on Security and Defense (SEDE), also founded in 2004, supports the Committee on Foreign Affairs in its responsibilities in the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP).
