Jacek Saryusz-Wolski

Jacek Emil Saryusz-Wolski (born September 19, 1948 in Łódź ) is a Polish politician and MEP . He belonged to the Platforma Obywatelska .

Life

He studied economics at the University of Łódź (graduated in 1971). This was followed by postgraduate studies at the University of Nancy (1972/1973). As early as the 1970s, he dealt there with issues relating to the European Community. In 1980 he got involved with the Solidarność trade union . In the same year he completed his doctorate in Lodz. In the 1980s he taught there as an assistant and assistant professor, repeatedly interrupted by stays abroad. After the system change in 1989, he was appointed Director of the Institute for European Studies at the University of Lodz ( Ośrodek Badań Europejskich Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego ). In 1991 he became the first authorized representative for European integration and foreign aid in the government of Jan Krzysztof Bielecki . Despite numerous changes of government, he remained in this office until 1996. From 1996 to 1999 he was Vice Rector of the College of Europe in Bruges and Natolin . He then returned to Jerzy Buzek's government as main advisor for European affairs (until 2001) and was the most important Polish negotiator at the Nice Summit in 2000 in this capacity . In June 2004, Saryusz-Wolski was elected to the European Parliament in the constituency of Lodz and elected vice-president a month later. In autumn 2005 he was considered one of the contenders for an important office in the government of Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz . He is married and has two children.

Jacek Saryusz-Wolski was Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defense Policy in the European Parliament from 2007 to 2009 . In the 2009 European elections he was re-elected to the European Parliament .

On March 4, 2017, the Polish Foreign Ministry nominated Szydło Saryusz-Wolski as a candidate for the office of President of the European Council under the cabinet in order to prevent Donald Tusk from being re-elected. As a consequence, the Civic Platform lifted his party membership. Saryusz-Wolski resigned from the EPP Group .

In the period from 2009 to 2014 Jacek Saryusz-Wolski has the following tasks as an EU parliamentarian:

  • Chairman of the Delegation for Relations with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
  • Deputy Chairman of the delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly .

Member of the Conference of Delegation Chairs, the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defense Policy and the delegation to the EU-Armenia, EU-Azerbaijan and EU-Georgia parliamentary cooperation committees.

He is one of the 89 people from the European Union against whom Russia imposed an entry ban in May 2015 .
