Gabriele Albertini (born July 6, 1950 in Milan , Italy ) is an Italian politician of Nuovo Centrodestra , former mayor of Milan and former member of the European Parliament with the Forza Italia party , which is part of the European People's Party .

Life and politics

After graduating in law in 1974, he worked from 1974 to 1997 as an entrepreneur in the Albertini Cesare company, which is active in the aluminum die-casting sector . From 1987 he was appointed representative for small businesses on the board of the Italian metal industry union Federmeccanica , of which he was chairman from 1996 to 1997. 1993 to 1997 became Vice President of Assolombarda. He held various positions in the Italian industrial business association Confindustria .

From 1997 to 2006 he succeeded Marco Formentini as Mayor of Milan . From 2002 to 2003 he was government representative for the sewage treatment of the city of Milan (since 2000) and for the immediate measures to solve the traffic and mobility problems of the city of Milan.

Since the European elections in 2004 he has been a member of the European Parliament for his party and sits in the Group of the European People's Party. Here he was initially a deputy member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy , deputy chairman of the delegation for relations with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and deputy member of the delegation for relations with the United States . After the 2009 European elections , he became chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs . He is currently a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Delegation for Relations with India . He is also a deputy in the Committee on Transport and Tourism and in the delegation for relations with Israel .

In 2013 he ran as a member of the Scelta Civica with the coalition of former Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti as President for the Regional Council of the Lombardy Region and for the Senate . He was eventually elected senator. He has been a member of the Nuovo Centrodestra party since 2014 .
