European elections in Finland 2019
The 2019 European elections took place in Finland on May 26, 2019. It was carried out as part of the EU- wide European elections in 2019 .
In Finland, 13 seats were initially awarded in the European Parliament , but 14 seats were elected. An elected representative from Finland will move into the European Parliament after the UK leaves the EU . There is no explicit threshold clause for parties .
The election took place six weeks after the national parliamentary election. At times the Finnish government planned to consolidate the elections, but this plan was rejected.
Electoral system
Finland uses an open list system when voting . The order of the candidates is not determined by the parties. The voters vote for a candidate, not a party. To determine the number of seats allocated to a party, the votes of all candidates of a party are added together. The D'Hondt method is used for this.
Lists can be linked together so that the votes of the parties are added together when allocating seats. Within a party, the seats are then awarded to the candidates with the most votes.
Starting position
European elections 2014
In the 2014 European elections , the conservative National Collection Party was the strongest party ahead of the Center Party . The Finns were able to improve their election results compared to 2009 by more than three percentage points, but remained below the survey results previously determined. However, at 12.9%, they became the third strongest force ahead of the Social Democratic Party , which achieved its worst ever result in a national election with 12.3%.
After the 2015 general election , the Center Party, The Finns and the National Collection Party formed a center-right coalition . Juha Sipilä (center) became prime minister . After the election of Jussi Halla-aho as the new chairman of the party The Finns, their coalition partners terminated the coalition. Then twenty MPs, including all cabinet members, resigned from the Finns party. They later founded the Blue Future party .
