Starting position
Election 2014
In the 2014 election , the Social Democratic Union, consisting of the then ruling Social Democratic Party PSD, the Conservative Party (PC) and the Progressive National Union UNPR, won half of the 32 mandates. There were twelve mandates for PSD and two each for PC and UNPR. The MPs joined the Socialist Group S&D.
The National Liberal Party PNL won six seats, the Democratic Liberal Party PD-L five. The PNL belonged to the liberal ALDE party , but switched to the EPP after the election . At the end of 2014, the PD-L, which was also part of the EPP, merged with the PNL.
The Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) and the People's Movement Party (PMP) each had two mandates . MEPs from both parties also joined the EPP Group . For this purpose, the non-party Mircea Diaconu moved into the European Parliament, which joined the ALDE parliamentary group.
development
The government of then PSD chairman Victor Ponta came under increasing allegations of corruption in the course of 2015 . In June 2015, prosecutors brought corruption charges against Ponta. Triggered by a fire in a Bucharest nightclub , massive demonstrations broke out that led to Ponta's resignation in November 2015. He was succeeded by the non-party Dacian Cioloş with a cabinet of technocrats supported by the PSD and PNL.
The 2016 parliamentary elections were won by the PSD. In a coalition with the liberal ALDE was Sorin Grindeanu new prime minister. In June 2017, the PSD withdrew its trust, as did his successor Mihai Tudose in January 2018. Viorica Dăncilă is currently Prime Minister.
Romania has held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union since January 1, 2019 .
New parties
In 2015, the Alianța Liberalilor și Democraților (ALDE) was created from the parts of the PNL that did not participate in the merger with the PD-L and the PC. In the 2016 parliamentary elections, she entered parliament with 5.6%. At European level, it belongs to the liberal party association ALDE .
After the Union's electoral successes , Bucharest (USB) saves in the local elections in June 2016 - among other things, the mayoral candidate Nicușor Dan scored almost 30% in Bucharest - the Union Save Romania (USR) was founded in July 2016 . It was the third strongest force in the 2016 general election with 8.9%.
From 2017, the former Prime Minister Victor Ponta , meanwhile excluded from the PSD, began to initiate a new party. On February 20, 2018, the party with the name PRO România (PRO) was officially founded. Ponta heads the list of PRO together with the EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Crețu . She describes herself as center-left and pro-European and has joined the European Democratic Party (EDP).
The former EU Agriculture Commissioner and former Romanian Prime Minister Dacian Cioloș founded the Mișcarea România Împreuna (RO +) party in March 2018. For formal reasons, he later moved to the new Partidul Libertății, Unității și Solidarității (PLUS). At the beginning of February 2019 PLUS and USR forged an electoral alliance, which was called "Electoral Alliance 2020 USR PLUS" with regard to the 2020 parliamentary elections .
MEPs Monica Macovei (M10, elected for PD-L), Maria Grapini (PPU, elected for PC) and Cătălin Ivan (ADN, elected for PSD) each founded insignificant small parties.
