Mircea Diaconu (born December 24, 1949 in Vlădeşti , Argeş County ) is a Romanian politician of the Partidul Național Liberal and actor .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1967, Diaconu studied at the National University of Theater and Film Arts "Ion Luca Caragiale" in Bucharest . As an actor he made his debut at the “Bulandra Theater” in the Romanian capital in Truman Capote's Die Glasarfe . Until 1982 he stayed at the Bulandra (under Liviu Ciulei ), then he moved to the Nottara Theater.

After numerous stage and film appearances, he was one of the first actors to terminate their contract as a result of the revolution, became a freelancer in 1990 and returned to the Nottara Theater in 2001, where he had to face a scandal over nepotism.

In 2008 Diaconu was elected to the Senate of Romania . In 2012 he was briefly Minister of Culture of Romania in the Ponta I cabinet of Victor Ponta , which he had to give up due to a ruling by the Romanian Constitutional Court due to "conflicts of interest". Diaconu has been a member of the European Parliament since 2014, where he is a member of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe . He is a member of the Committee on Culture and Education and of the delegation for relations with the Arabian Peninsula. Diaconu is married to actress Diana Lupescu and has two children.
