Liviu Ciulei

Liviu Ciulei (born July 7, 1923 in Bucharest , † October 24, 2011 in Munich , Germany ) was a Romanian actor , film director , set designer , theater director and director .

Ciulei graduated from the Conservatorul de Artǎ Dramaticǎ in Bucharest in 1946 . He made his debut in 1946 as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Teatrul Odeon. At the same time he studied architecture at the University of Bucharest until 1949 .

In 1948 he was committed to the municipal theater in Bucharest, which was founded in 1947, initially as an actor and set designer, later as a director. From 1963 to 1972 he was director of the theater, which was renamed Lucia Sturdza-Bulandra in 1963, and in 1990 he became honorary director. From 1972 on he worked as a freelance director.

He staged, among other things, Nash's Der Regenmacher (1957), Shaw's The Holy Johanna (1959/60), As You Like It (1960, with himself as Jacques), Pogodin's Das Glockenspiel des Kremlin (1960, with himself as Lenin), The Threepenny Opera (1964), Danton's death (1960, with himself as Danton), Macbeth (1968), Leonce and Lena (1968), Caragiales A Lost Love Letter (1972, with himself as Dandanache), Paul Foster's Elisabeth I ( 1974), Labiches Das Sparschwein (1974), Nachtasyl (1960, 1975), Dürrenmatt's Play Strindberg (1976, with himself in the leading role), A Long Day's Journey into the Night (1976), The Storm (1978) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (1990).

Since 1967 Ciulei has been touring several times. Ciulei built space stages for this purpose, which took on an important dramatic and narrative function in his productions.

Since 1951 he has also appeared in front of the camera as an actor. Between 1957 and 1964 he directed three films that made him an internationally known film director. Eruption takes place in the Romanian oil region, The Danube is burning describes the fight of a Romanian who switched to the side of the Allies in the Second World War against the Germans. In particular, his conscience drama The Forest of the Hanged from the time of the First World War was noted and in 1965 was awarded the Director's Prize at the Cannes Film Festival .

In 1963 he was co-founder and until 1968 Vice President of the Romanian Asociația Cineaștilor (ACIN). In 1980 he settled in the United States and was artistic director of the Tyrone Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis from 1981 to 1985. Here he staged, among others, Der Sturm (1981/82), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1985/86), Thomas Bernhard's Before Retirement (1982), Faulkner's Requiem for a Nun (1982), Peer Gynt (1982), Three Sisters (1984 / 85), Die Bakchen (1987/88) and Der zerbrochne Krug (1994/95).

Since the 1990s, Ciulei has been staging again in Romania, for example Hamlet in 2000 and 2005. Six people are looking for an author at the Bulandra Theater, and he was involved in its renovation. He taught at Columbia University , among others, and received numerous national and international awards. Most recently he lived in Munich.

Liviu Ciulei was married three times: with the actress Clody Berthola , with the scenographer Ioana Gǎrdescu and with the journalist Helga Reiter . His adopted son Thomas (the son of Helga Reiters with a GDR writer) works as a cameraman, screenwriter and film director.
