Cannes International Film Festival / Best Director
The prize for the best director ( Prix de la mise en scène ) honors the best performance by a director in a competition film (feature film) at the annual Cannes Film Festival . The award was first presented at the premiere of the film festival in 1946. The competition jury, which is usually composed of international filmmakers, votes on the award of the prize, which is presented to the winner in the form of a certificate.
Award winners
The most frequently awarded directors' awards were French and American directors (13 wins each), followed by their colleagues from the former Soviet Union (6), Great Britain and Mexico (3 each). The American Joel Coen (1991, 1996 and 2001) was able to triumph three times , followed by the two French René Clément (1946 and 1949) and Robert Bresson (1957 and 1983), the Soviet director Sergei Jutkewitsch (1956 and 1966) and the British John Boorman (1970 and 1998) with two wins each. The Soviet Russian Julija Solnzewa (1961 for Flaming Years ) and the American Sofia Coppola (2017 for The Seduced ) are the only female film directors to receive the award.
Several times in the past, the jury was unable to agree on a winner. Directors from German-language cinema were successful in 1982 and 1987 when Werner Herzog ( Fitzcarraldo ) and Wim Wenders ( Der Himmel über Berlin ) were able to prevail against the competition.
In the past, juries had the opportunity to combine the director's award with other awards. The last time this happened was in 1993 when the British contribution Naked was also awarded the Actor Award for leading actor David Thewlis . In the meantime, the regulations prohibit the directing award (as well as the Golden Palm and the Grand Jury Prize ) from being cumulated with other awards. This fact has been criticized repeatedly, most recently in 2012 when the jury president Nanni Moretti admitted in the final press conference that he would have awarded the Palme d'Or, Michael Haneke's love , the Actor and Screenplay Prize without any regulations.
