Amat Escalante

Amat Escalante (born February 28, 1979 in Barcelona , Spain ) is a Mexican film director , producer and screenwriter . In 2013 he received the Film Festival in Cannes for his film Heli the prize for best director .

Life

Amat Escalante was born in Barcelona but spent most of his childhood and youth in the Mexican city of Guanajuato . He later returned to Barcelona to study film editing and sound at the Centro de Estudios Cinematograficos de Catalunya .

His first short film Amarrados was awarded at several festivals in 2002. He then worked as assistant director to Carlos Reygadas in the production of the highly acclaimed film Battle in Heaven .

In 2005 he finally presented his first own feature film, Sangre . It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the Un Certain Regard section .

In the following years he made two more movies with Los Bastardos and Heli . For the latter, he received an invitation to compete at the 66th Cannes Film Festival in 2013 , where he won the directing award .

In 2016 Escalante received an invitation to compete at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival for his feature film La región salvaje .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
