In 1979 Cuba launched an initiative and hosted the 1st International Festival of New Latin American Film. The film festival also offers filmmakers a forum to discuss the perspective of the New Latin American Film in seminars.

As part of the 6th Festival on December 4, 1985, the Committee of Latin America's Cineastes founded the New Latin American Film Foundation (Spanish: Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano - FNCL) with the aim of contributing to strengthening national cinematographies and continental cooperation.
