Sergio Giral

Sergio Giral (born January 2, 1937 in Havana , Cuba ) is a Cuban film director.

Life

The son of an American and a Cuban, Giral grew up in New York City . In 1961, at the invitation of Néstor Almendros, he moved to Cuba to work with him at the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos . There he worked as a director's assistant and as head of the public relations department. He was a jury member at various film festivals, such as the Latin American Film Festival in Havana , the Damascus Film Festival in Syria and the Festival de Amiens in France . The films El otro Francisco , Rancheador and Maluala , which are part of his film trilogy on the age of slavery in the Caribbean , have received various Cuban and international awards. At the beginning of the 1990s he returned to the USA .
