Karim Aïnouz (born January 17, 1966 in Fortaleza , Brazil ) is a Brazilian-Algerian film director and visual artist .

Life

Ainouz's film debut, Madame Satã , premiered at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard series.

His subsequent films, Love for Sale and I Travel Because I Have To I Come Back Because I Love You (co-directed with Marcelo Gomes) premiered at the Venice Film Festival, Orizzonti, in 2006 and 2009, respectively.

In 2011, The Silver Cliff was presented at the Quinzaine des Realisateurs in Cannes.

In 2008, Ainouz directed Alice , a 13-episode fiction series for HBO Latin America.

His short films and installations have been shown at numerous venues such as the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial, the São Paulo Biennial, the Sharjah Biennial and Videobrasil.

In 2012 he was invited as a jury member for the Cinéfondation and Short Film sections at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. Ainouz took part in the Cathedrals of Culture project , a documentary series in 3D with Wim Wenders as executive producer and Ainouz as one of the directors.

He shot his film Futuro Beach , which was nominated for the main competition of the Berlinale 2014 , in Germany and Brazil .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
