A Pearl Eternity (original title: La teta asustada ) is a Peruvian film by Claudia Llosa from 2009. In the film, she works on the Peruvian past in the 1980s during the civil war between the guerrilla organization Sendero Luminoso ("Shining Path") and the military when many women were raped. The drama was the first Peruvian film to participate in the Berlinale and won the Golden Bear . The film opened in German cinemas on November 5, 2009.

action

The young woman Fausta lives with her mother and her uncle's family in a poor district on the outskirts of Lima. The traumatic experiences of her mother, who was raped as a pregnant woman in the civil war between the guerrilla organization “ Sendero Luminoso ” and the military, she “saw from within” and, as it were, absorbed it with her mother's milk. She lives in constant fear of sexual assault. Just like her mother, Fausta sings songs she has created in Quechua when fears arise. To protect herself from attacks, she inserted a potato into her vagina , which sprouts and sprouts there.

When her mother dies, Fausta has to face her fears alone. Her uncle wants to bury her mother in the courtyard, but Fausta wants to bring her mother home; to the province. In order to earn the necessary money, she takes a job as a domestic servant for the composer Aída. Fausta slowly begins to open up. Dealing with Noé, the composer's gardener, helps her with this. But only the anger about the unjust treatment by her mistress leads to Fausta's will to live finally awakening. She gets the money for the trip to the province. She has the potato surgically removed. On the drive to the provinces with the dead mother in the back of the flatbed truck, she stops by the sea to bury her mother on the beach with a view of the sea.

background

The main character in the film, Fausta, suffers from a mental illness known as the "milk of suffering". Children who had to witness the rape of their mother as unborn take in their traumatic experiences as it were with their mother's milk - this is the popular opinion, hence the title of the film "The Milk of Sorrow" (in Spanish literally: "La teta asustada"; German: The frightened chest ). The film will be released on DVD under the name Eine Perle Ewigkeit .

Leading actress Magaly Solier Romero was discovered by Llosa in 2006 on the market square of Huanta, a town in the Ayacucho region . She had already written her first film, Madeinusa , for Solier Romero.

The Commission for Truth and Reconciliation (Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación, CVR) established in 2001 recorded almost 70,000 murdered people, countless rapes, kidnappings and other human rights violations in the fight between the Maoist guerrilla organization "Shining Path" and of state power, especially under Presidents Alan García (1st term) and Alberto Fujimori .

criticism

The film was received mixed by film critics. The performance of Magaly Solier Romero, which was even cheered by the taz, was highlighted . According to Spiegel Online , "[her] face becomes a landscape, a space of experience". Their beauty captivates the viewer, but at the same time rejects them. Only towards the end of the film, after the "painful path of self-acceptance", does "something seem to stir in this mask". At the same time, the film was rated as “brittle” and “a challenge for moviegoers”. According to the Tagesspiegel , the film is not political. In addition, he never makes the mistake of "relying on the bizarre"; One learns Fausta's precautions against assaults "almost by the way". According to the Berliner Zeitung, the film completely ruins the "serious and important topic" with the very precautions that are dismissed as "intrusive to silly psychoanalytic metaphor".

Months after the success in Berlin, Llosa's film was presented as the official Peruvian entry for the nomination for the best foreign language film at the 2010 Academy Awards .

Awards

In addition to the Golden Bear and FIPRESCI Prize of the Berlin Film Festival, Eine Perle Ewigkeit also won the 2009 Film and Actor Awards (each for Magaly Solier Romero) at the Mexican Film Festival in Guadalajara and the Latin American Film Festival in Lima . At the Montréal Festival of New Cinema in October 2009, the Quebec film critics awarded their prize to Llosa's film, while Solier Romero was again awarded the Actor Prize. At the 31st International Festival of New Latin American Films in Havana, the film won the main prize in 2009, the Great Coral. In 2010 , Eine Perle Ewigkeit was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film .
