Pablo Larraín Matte (born August 19, 1976 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean film director , producer and screenwriter .

Life

Pablo Larraín was born in the Chilean capital Santiago in 1976 as the second child of the later UDI party officials Hernán Larraín and Magdalena Matte .

He studied film at the Universidad de las Artes, Ciencias, y Comunicaciones (UNIACC) in Santiago. His lecturers included the renowned Chilean filmmaker and writer Miguel Littín . He then worked as a photographer and commercial filmmaker.

In 2005 he founded the production company Fábula with his brother Juan de Dios Larraín . He made his feature film debut a year later with the award-winning musician drama Fuga .

In the three subsequent feature films Tony Manero , Post Mortem and No! he deals with the history of the military dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet . No! was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film in 2013 as the first Chilean film ever . At the Berlinale 2015 , his film was El Club the Grand Jury Prize .

In 2016, Jackie: The First Lady, his first English-language feature film, followed. The drama follows the American President's wife Jacqueline Kennedy (played by Natalie Portman ) for three days after the murder of her husband John F. Kennedy .

In addition to his directorial work, Larraín has also appeared as a producer of other highly regarded Chilean films in recent years, such as The Year of the Tiger and Gloria by Sebastián Lelio or Young & Wild by Marialy Rivas .

He is married to the Chilean actress Antonia Zegers . The couple have two children.
