Sebastián Lelio (born March 8, 1974 in Mendoza , Argentina ) is a Chilean film director and screenwriter .

Life

Sebastián Lelio was born in 1974 in the Argentine city of Mendoza, but grew up in Chile. After graduating from school, he studied film at the Escuela de cine de Chile . After a series of short and documentary films, he made his feature film debut in 2006 with La sagrada familia . The family drama, shot in just three days, premiered at the San Sebastián Film Festival and won prizes at a total of eight festivals.

In 2012 he was a guest of the DAAD's Berlin artist program . His fourth feature film, Gloria , entered the competition at the 63rd Berlinale in 2013 and received a Silver Bear for best actress .

In 2017 Lelio received another invitation to compete at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival for his feature film Eine fantastische Frau . The film focuses on the young waitress and transgender woman Marina (played by Daniela Vega ), who dreams of a career as a singer and at the same time is confronted with the sudden death of her significant other . The film earned Lelio the Teddy Award and the Silver Bear for best screenplay at the Berlinale . A year later, was a fantastic woman as an official Chilean contribution to the Academy Awards in 2018 as Best Foreign Language Film Award.

In 2019 he was appointed to the competition jury of the 69th Berlin International Film Festival .

A Berliner by choice, he opened the Latin American restaurant Gloria in Kreuzberg in August 2013 .
