action

Ronit Krushka comes from a Jewish Orthodox family in London , but lives alone as a photographer in New York . She is considered the "black sheep" of the family. When her father, a revered rabbi , collapses during a sermon and dies shortly afterwards, Ronit returns to London for the funeral service. During the wake she learns that Dovid Kuperman, who was like a spiritual son to her father, has married her childhood friend Esti. He should succeed him as rabbi in the community. Ronit had a teenage romance with Esti, who works as a teacher.

When Ronit visits her uncle Moshe Hartog to talk to him about the distribution of the inheritance, she learns that her father has bequeathed all of his property, including his house, to the local synagogue . Moshe gives his niece the house keys so she can pick up her old belongings that she didn't take with her before moving to the United States . On the way there she meets Esti, who accompanies her into the house. After the two of them have looked around the house and reminisced about their youth together, Esti walks up to Ronit and kisses her.

On the way home, Esti confesses that she loves women and is not happy in her marriage to Dovid, but that she chose this life based on advice from Rabbi Krushka and her religiosity. She and Ronit never had a relationship with other women again, although it is implied that Ronit is bisexual as she has a one-night stand with a man at the beginning of the film . The two go to the park where they had their first kiss. When they are exchanging tenderness, they are discovered by a couple from the neighborhood. Esti may run away undetected, but the couple suspect that Ronit and Esti are having an affair , which Ronit denies.

The next day, Esti is called to the headmaster's office because the couple has complained about her and Ronit. On the street she meets Ronit, who will soon be flying back to New York. They go to a hotel and indulge in passionate lovemaking, which is in stark contrast to Esti's weekly intercourse with Dovid. Soon after, Esti confesses the affair to her husband. She also tells him that she is pregnant and asks him to give her her freedom.

At Rabbi Krushka's funeral, Dovid is supposed to give the eulogy. However, he puts down his manuscript and refers to the sermon during which the old rabbi collapsed. This was about the importance of free will . Dovid allows his wife the freedom she wanted and refuses to take on the duties of the late rabbi.

The next day, Ronit gets into a taxi to the airport. Esti kisses her goodbye and Ronit wishes her all the best. Esti will take her life into her own hands and raise her child outside of the community. They promise each other to keep in touch. Ronit pays her last respects to her father at his grave before flying back home.
