action

Two best friends in the youthful exuberance of their first love. Nothing could tarnish their joy were it not for their fathers, who stand in the way of their daughters' happiness.

The news of the imminent change of the parish vicar brings unrest into the bourgeois everyday life. The schoolmaster Anton Wögerbauer wants to take this event as an opportunity to retire and finally to shake hands with his daughter Hedwig to his prospective successor, Josef Hofer. The rich linen dealer and liberal mayor Ignaz Schraml, in turn, wants to use this opportunity to push back the increasing influence of the church in public life. In order to be more present on the social stage, he organizes a trotting race.

But events do not take their intended course. The farmer's son Adam unexpectedly wins the race and on this occasion makes his relationship with Schraml's daughter Karoline public. Schraml has completely different plans for his daughter. Josef and Hedwig's marriage plans are also threatened with an abrupt end. In the thicket of personal sensitivities and confused feelings, influenced by family circumstances and the Vienna stock market crash, fate breaks an unexpected path.
