Johanna Maria Rachinger (born January 9, 1960 in Putzleinsdorf ) has been Director General of the Austrian National Library since 2001 .

Life

After graduating from the commercial academy in Rohrbach in 1979, Rachinger studied theater studies and German at the University of Vienna . In 1986 she received her doctorate with a thesis on Das Wiener Volkstheater in the second half of the 19th century, paying special attention to the playwright Ludwig Anzengruber . After graduating, she worked as an editor for the Wiener Frauenverlag .

From 1988 to 1992, Rachinger was the head of the book advice center of the Austrian library in Salzburg. At Ueberreuter Verlag she was program manager for youth books from 1992 to 1995, from 1994 authorized signatory and from 1995 to 2001 managing director.

In 2001, Minister of Education Elisabeth Gehrer appointed Rachinger as the new General Director of the Austrian National Library, and in 2010 and 2016 the contract was extended by six years each.

From 2004 to 2009 Rachinger was a member of the Austrian Science Council . She is also a member of the jury for the Liese Prokop Women's Prize , a member of the Senate of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , a member of the ERSTE Foundation's supervisory board and a member of the scientific advisory board of the Upper Austrian think tank Academia Superior .

From 2018 to 2023 she is a member of the University Council of the University of Artistic and Industrial Design in Linz .

Awards

In 2003 she received the Vienna Women's Prize . For the ÖNB project to scan the library's public domain books together with Google , the press voted it Austrian of the Year in the cultural management category in 2010. In 2012 she was named WU Manager of the Year by the Vienna University of Economics and Business . In 2013 she was named “Communicator of the Year”. In 2016, Rachinger was awarded the Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class.

Private

Johanna Rachinger has been married to the publisher Fritz Panzer since 1993 .
