The Ueberreuter publishing group is a German-speaking publishing company. Carl Ueberreuter Verlag (Vienna), Ueberreuter Verlag GmbH (Berlin) and Annette Betz Verlag have been owned by G&G Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (Glöckler Group) since 2014. It is considered to be one of the last independent, medium-sized companies on the German book market with the Ueberreuter non-fiction and Ueberreuter children's and youth books divisions .

Ueberreuter is the top-selling non-fiction book publisher in Austria and is one of the leading children's and youth book publishers in the German-speaking region.

Name and story

In 1548 Hanns Köhler (Johannes Carbo) from Regensburg and Egidius Adler from Ghent founded a printing company in Vienna, which later became the Ueberreuter printing company - the oldest existing Viennese printing company in Vienna- Alsergrund . From 1642 the old Cracow writing calendar was printed there. In 1748 Johann Thomas Edler von Trattner acquired the printing company. In 1805, Georg Ueberreuter , who had been the printer's manager for many years, became the owner. In 1866 his descendant Carl Ueberreuter sold the printing, type foundry and publishing bookstore to the paper manufacturer Matthäus Salzer , and in 1934 a publishing house was founded. In 1946, Thomas F. Salzer founded a children's and youth book publisher under the name Carl Ueberreuter Verlag in Vienna . The program included books for children and young people as well as non-fiction and specialist books for adults.

The picture book publisher Annette Betz , founded in Munich in 1958 , has been part of the Carl Ueberreuter publishing group since 1972, and the Tosa publishing house since 2005. In 1979 the company received the state award and has since been allowed to use the federal coat of arms in business transactions.

In the summer of 2000 the Ueberreuter Wirtschaftsverlag (with a manager academy) was sold to the “ Süddeutscher Verlag Hüthig Fachinformationen GmbH ” and merged with the book division of the “modern industry” publishing house belonging to the same group. In April 2007, Lappan Verlag GmbH in Oldenburg in northern Germany was bought. In autumn 2009 Ueberreuter Verlag launched the fantasy & mystery label otherworld , in which fantasy and mystery novels are published for an adult audience. In 2010, Imprint Tosa , which specializes in modern antiquarian bookstores, was sold to XXL Verlags GmbH in Fränkisch-Crumbach .

Since 2012 the Ueberreuter children's and youth book program and the picture book imprint Annette Betz have their headquarters in the Aufbau Haus in Berlin-Kreuzberg .

In January 2014 the publishers Annette Betz and Ueberreuter Kinder- und Jugendbuch were bought by G & G Verlagsgesellschaft mbH. This combined the largest children's book publisher in Austria and the largest children's and young adult book publisher in Berlin. The owner, managing director and publishing director is Georg Glöckler .

The Lappan Verlag GmbH and the mostly Austrian Ueberreuter non-fiction book program initially remained in the possession of the Salzer Holding . On January 1, 2015, Lappan Verlag switched from Salzer Holding to Carlsen Verlag .

In June 2014, the Glöckler Group also took over Carl Ueberreuter Sachbuchverlag and, since June 2015, the imprint hippopotamus.

In October 2018, the Ueberreuter Print & Packaging printing company in Korneuburg is to be closed for good after 160 years, affecting 50 employees.

The name of this prize goes back to Wolfgang Hohlbein , who was discovered by Ueberreuter in a writing competition in 1983.
