Building house
The Aufbau Haus is a multi-storey commercial building with two wings on Moritzplatz in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin . The building connects cultural businesses with businesses in the creative milieu in a unique way and therefore describes itself as a “creative department store”. The former factory building is home to the Aufbau publishing group , which gave the house its name, as well as the design academy berlin and Modulor Material Total.
location
The superstructure house is located on the south-western side of Moritzplatz between the confluences of Oranienstrasse and Prinzenstrasse . The building is located directly at the Moritzplatz underground station and opposite the Prinzessinnengärten .
history
Moritzplatz was created at the beginning of the 20th century to embody urbanity . The large Wertheim department store had its headquarters here. On the south-eastern side of the square, where the Prinzessinnengärten are located, the department store, which the architect Eugen Schmohl designed and completed in 1913 , dominated the square with 27 wide window axes. On the opposite side of the street - where the Aufbau Haus now stands - one of the largest restaurants and entertainment venues had settled: Bierquelle Aschinger AG with a concert hall and adjoining theater.
When the 1st and 3rd Air Divisions of the United States Army Air Forces aired the attacks on Berlin's city center on February 3, 1945, Moritzplatz was also hit. While the old buildings to the east of the square remained largely intact, the other buildings on the square were destroyed and replaced by new buildings in the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1970s, all the remaining old buildings were demolished, leaving a lot of fallow land. Three sides of the square are waiting for a structurally adequate new space (status at the end of 2014).
From an urban planning perspective, Moritzplatz is part of a mixed area with a high proportion of businesses. The street alignment and the three plazas Moritzplatz, Oranienplatz and Heinrichplatz were laid down in detail in the first development plan from 1843. Because the zoning plan was based on the model of the car-friendly city in the 1960s , the city administration planned the motorway bypass of the A 106 south of Oranienstrasse. For decades this plan prevented the restoration of the remaining old buildings and the fallow land. It was not until the International Building Exhibition in 1987 that these plans were revised.
architecture
The first phase of the construction house is a reconstruction and expansion of a new building on a plot of land belonging to the former Bechstein piano factory . The four-story existing building was a superior five-storey building with head building expanded the 22 m height, the former eaves resumes. The former factory building was energetically renovated to meet the legal requirements of the 21st century. In the existing large rooms, sales and office areas have been created in the existing rear part of the building and smaller-scale commercial units and creative ateliers in the front part of the building.
The first construction phase was completed in the summer of 2011 and comprises 17,500 square meters of retail and office space.
With the second construction phase of the construction house, the gap at the transition from Moritzplatz to Oranienstrasse will be closed. A concrete grid that can be read in the facade and large-format window openings with prefabricated parapet elements on the street side characterize this new building. The courtyard side of the house is designed to be much more open thanks to loggias and a green facade. The attic, which is a light wood construction, called "Atelier", is rented out for events.
In 2013/2014, the Aufbau Haus was awarded an award by the Land of Ideas and in 2015 was voted the most creative hotspot in town by 99designs .
The second construction phase was completed in April 2015 and comprises 5,000 square meters of retail and office space.
Concept and usage
The Aufbau Haus was created as a center for creative people, in which professional artists of all genres can realize interdisciplinary collaboration. The overall concept is supplemented by social facilities such as the Wildfang day care center and cultural institutions such as the TAK - Theater im Aufbau Haus .
The Aufbau Verlagsgruppe and the Ueberreuter Verlag use the upper floors of the first construction phase in Prinzenstraße 85. Modulor with Planet Modulor as an association of small and medium-sized companies from trade, craft, design, art and culture uses the three lower floors on 10,000 m². On the ground floor you will find the Moritzplatz bookstore and gastronomic offers: the Rock-Paper-Scissors café in the entrance area and the Parker Bowles restaurant on Prinzenstraße. In December 2019, Ch. Links Verlag will also move into the Aufbau Haus.
The association Theater Aufbau Kreuzberg eV places particular emphasis on minority cultures and youth work. Under the direction of a theater pedagogue, the association develops its own productions and there is a regular theater and cultural exchange with the Arab world, especially Iraq.
In the second construction phase - Prinzenstrasse 84 - the design academy berlin has combined its Berlin locations on two floors. Seven self-organizations of the Sinti and Roma set new cultural accents and represent the interests of this minority. The Documentation and Cultural Center of German Sinti and Roma has its Berlin representative office here and regularly offers exhibitions and events on the subject of antiziganism .
