Building in existing buildings (also existing building) includes the following, value-preserving or value-increasing construction measures on existing buildings as defined in the HOAI : maintenance , repairs , modernizations , conversions , extensions, reconstruction .

The following terms are usually assigned to building in existing structures: modernization , renovation , renovation of old buildings , energetic renovation , repair , maintenance , conservation , reconstruction , relocation , restoration .

The DIN 276 -1: 2008-12 Building costs - Part 1: Building recommends: "In construction projects in the portfolio, the cost of demolition, renovation and new construction work should be distinguished."
